Leddy Library has a trial of the new 19th-century British Library Newspapers database.  Users must be on campus to access this trial.  The most comprehensive range of national, regional and local newspapers in 19th century Britain ever made available in a digital collection, 19th Century British Library Newspapers Part I and Part II provide a range of publications to reflect the social, political and cultural events of the times.Taken directly from the extensive holdings of the British Library, the selected publications provide coverage of well-known historic events, cultural icons, sporting events, the arts, culture and other national pastimes. At a time when newspapers were emerging as a prerequisite medium of commercially-minded societies and major cities, their pages — from articles to advertisements — provide researchers with unique, first-hand perspective.

Users can search across a large range of titles, not typically available at any one institution, and can perform full-text searches, use hit-term highlighting and view specific article types

Dave earned his Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario in 2011. He recently completed a contract position as Public Services Librarian at Mount Allison University.

Leddy Libraries’ Librarian Research Series will continue Friday, April 13th at 11:00 with Mita Williams presenting, “The Library as Interface for Public Space and Public Self.” Mita will explore the library’s potential to help bridge the digital divide and to play a key role in facilitating public space and the infrastructure of the Internet  as a means to share and engage with each other. Leddy Library is currently offering a trial of ProQuest History Vault.  This trial is available on campus only and can be accessed here.   ProQuest History Vault debuts with three modules of archival collections documenting two of the most important and widely studied topics in 20th Century American History: the Black Freedom Struggle and the Vietnam War. These modules are but the first three in a five-year plan of more than 25 individual modules of rich and varied content that create a full spectrum of archival materials to complement coursework in many areas including African-American studies, women’s studies, history, political science, and more. Institutions can build their collections over time to provide an unparalleled research experience for their students and faculty who would otherwise be unable to access materials held at geographically-dispersed archives.  Please note this trial is available on campus only.  Please let us know if you have any feedback about this trial.

Celebrate Black History Month by exploring some of Leddy Library’s fantastic Black History digital resources

Black Thought and Culture contains 1,297 sources with 1,098 authors, covering the non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before. Where possible the complete published non-fiction works are included, as well as interviews, journal articles, speeches, essays, pamplets, letters and other fugitive material.

Black Studies Center is a fully cross-searchable gateway to Black Studies including scholarly essays, recent periodicals, historical newspaper articles, and much more.  It combines several resources for research and teaching in Black Studies: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, The HistoryMakers^® Videos and full transcripts for interviews with 100 contemporary African Americans, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), historical black newspapers, and the Black Literature Index.

Black Women Writers celebrates the many voices of women from Africa and the African Diaspora. Offering fiction, poetry, and essays from three continents, the database gives an unparalleled view of black women’s struggles through time. The database features over 105,996 pages.

Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice: Bringing together primary source documents from archives and libraries across the Atlantic world, this resource allows students and researchers to explore and compare unique material relating to the complex subjects of slavery, abolition and social justice. In addition to the primary source documents there is a wealth of useful secondary sources for research and teaching; including an interactive map, scholarly essays, tutorials, a visual sources gallery, chronology and bibliography.

African American Music Reference will contain 50,000 pages that offers the first comprehensive coverage of blues, jazz, spirituals, civil rights songs, slave songs, minstrelsy, rhythm and blues, gospel, and other forms of black American musical expression.

African American Poetry: The early history of African American poetry, from the first recorded poem by an African American (Lucy Terry Prince’s ‘Bars Fight’, c.1746) to the major poets of the nineteenth century, including Paul Laurence Dunbar and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

What better way to kick off the new year than with words of wisdom from those who have threaded before us?
