At a time when newspapers were emerging as a prerequisite medium of commercially-minded societies and major cities, their pages — from articles to advertisements — provide researchers with unique, first-hand perspective.

Welcome to British Records on the Atlantic World, 1700-1900 from Microform Academic Publishers (available here until May 2, 2012)

This series brings together a wealth of collections spanning two centuries of Britain’s colonisation, commercial, missionary and even literary relations with Africa and the Americas. Alongside the records of Liverpool merchants involved in the infamous Triangular Trade, there are those of slave plantation owners, of early Anglican missionaries, of naval and customs officials, and of a group of socialists from Lancashire, who maintained a lengthy correspondence over many years with the father of American poetry.

This collection includes digitized images of American magazines and journals never before available outside the walls of the AAS, and is not available for acquisition in digital form from any other source. More than 7,600 periodicals comprised of over seven million pages are available, eclipsing all other online resources in this area.

These modules are but the first three in a five-year plan of more than 25 individual modules of rich and varied content that create a full spectrum of archival materials to complement coursework in many areas including African-American studies, women’s studies, history, political science, and more. Institutions can build their collections over time to provide an unparalleled research experience for their students and faculty who would otherwise be unable to access materials held at geographically-dispersed archives. Please note this trial is available on campus only. Please let us know if you have any feedback about this trial.

Leddy currently has a trial of Proquest’s Vogue Archive. This trial is available on campus only and available only until October 8, 2011. Check it out here and let us know what you think.

The Vogue Archive contains the entire run of Vogue magazine (US edition) from 1892 to the present day, reproduced in high-resolution color page images. More than 400,000 pages are included, constituting a treasure trove of the work from the greatest designers, photographers, stylists and illustrators of the 20th and 21st centuries. Vogue is a unique record of American and international popular culture that extends beyond fashion. The Vogue Archive is an essential primary source for the study of fashion, gender and modern social history – past, present and future.

The database will allow fashion design and photography students to find inspirational images, but will also cater for academic study. Fashion marketing students will be able to research the history of a brand identity by viewing every advertisement for a brand such as Revlon, Coty, Versace or Chanel between specified dates. Researchers in cultural studies and gender studies will be able to explore themes such as body image, gender roles and social tastes from the 1890s to the present.

ProQuest’s unique partnership with Condé Nast means that the latest issue will be added each month with no embargo period. Users can conduct powerful searches to reveal results in all text, captions, and titles throughout the magazine, including advertisements, covers and fold-outs.

The world’s most widely circulated English daily newspaper was founded in 1838 to serve British residents of West India.
Today this historical newspaper serves researchers interested in studying colonialism and post-colonialism, British and world
history, class and gender issues, international relations, comparative religion, international economics, terrorism, and more.

In its pages, The Times of India illuminates key historical events such as the Sepoy Mutiny, which lead to British rule in
India; the formation of the Indian National Congress; and the rise of Gandhi’s civil disobedience movement. It captures the
1947 partitioning of India and Pakistan, the war over the Kashmir region, and the creation of Bangladesh. It reports on the
assassinations of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi; the Bhopal industrial disaster, which resulted in thousands of deaths; and the
rise of Pakistan as a nuclear power. And, it provides coverage of sports, the Indian film industry, and other stories of
everyday life.

Confidential Print: Middle East, 1839-1969 is the second of our complete online series of ‘Confidential Print’ documents issued by the United Kingdom Foreign and Colonial Office since c1820.

From the Egyptian reforms of Muhammad Ali Pasha in the nineteenth century, the Middle East Conference of 1921, the Mandates for Palestine and Mesopotamia and the Suez Crisis in 1956, to the partition of Palestine, post-Suez Western foreign policy and the Arab-Israeli conflict, Confidential Print: Middle East is a fundamental resource for academics, students and researchers studying the modern Middle East. These historical documents inform the volatile situation in the region today.
